Plastpro Planking FAQ

Here is a compilation of some of the questions Inside Sales has been asked regarding our planking products:

1. Can I install this product in an outdoor shower at my beach house?  Are the planks water-tight once installed?
A: Yes, you can install Plastpro pre-finished planking in an outdoor facility such as the shower or sunroom (UV protect?). You need to put silicone into the gap between the tongue and groove connections for the planks to be water-tight.

 

2. How much space should I leave between each plank while installing.  How much space from corners?
A: Please leave 1/32” between each plank while installing for the expansion and contraction and 1/4” from corners each end.

 

3. Do I need to rough up the surface with sandpaper before priming?
A: For priming, you don’t need to sand the surface but cleaning is necessary.

 

4. Can I use a roller to paint?  What do you suggest to have a smooth finish w/ minimal or no brushstrokes?
A: Yes, you can use a roller or brushstroke to paint. Please see the installation instruction for the details. The pray painting is recommended for a smooth finish.

 

5. The paint is coming off of my planking.  I let it dry for 48 hours before I installed it. What do I do now?
A: Priming is necessary before you paint the planking.

 

6. How close to my stove can I install this planking? 
A: The locations where you install Plastpro planking, such as the stove or fireplace, cannot exceed temperatures over 135oF.

 

7. I have a radiator that gets very hot.  How close can I install this planking?
A: The locations where you install Plastpro planking, such as the stove or fireplace, cannot exceed temperatures over 135oF.

 

8. I have baseboard heating.  Can I install this product? 
A; Yes, the place where you install Plastpro planking cannot exceed temperatures 135oF.

 

9. Can I install this product directly over....            -Existing wood paneling?
A: Yes, you can install Plastpro planking on the existing wood paneling. Please see the installation instruction.
-Existing wallpaper? 
A: Yes, peeling off the wallpaper before installing Plastpro planking for a quality adhesion is recommended. For a securable holding strength, nailing is necessary. Please see the installation instruction.           

-Damaged Sheetrock?
A: Yes, for a securable holding strength, nailing is necessary. Please see the installation instruction.

 

10. What kind of silicone/caulking would you recommend using for application of your product in a high-moisture area?
A: For a high-moisture area, the acrylic silicone/ caulk or similar quality products that accommodate with PVC products is recommended.

 

11. Do you recommend painting this product if it is to be used in a high moisture area?
A: Plastpro pre-finished planking is moisture resistant.

 

12. What kind of primer do you recommend?  How many coats of primer need to be applied?
A: Water based primer is preferred.  One coat of primer is good enough for painting.

 

13. Do you know what wood putty matched best with the unpainted planking?
A: Plastpro pre-finished planking is not necessary to apply any painting since it is pre-finished product and ready to install.

 

14. Which Liquid Nails product do I use to install the planking? 
A: Any liquid nails of construction and remodeling with high strength, heavy bonding and water resistant are recommended.

 

15. I've read that certain vinyl products can give off dioxins/harmful chemicals.  Is this the kind of vinyl used in your wainscot? 
A: Plastpro planking is made of PVC. It would not release dioxin unless it burned. The dioxin forms as the combustion gases when temperatures primarily reach 298oF.

 

16. What kind of vinyl is used to make your product?
A: Plastpro planking is made of PVC.

 

17. If an air nailer to nail the planking into a ceiling, and also, if the tongue was big enough to do so.  Can you help with this?
A: There is no problem to nail the planking by the air nailer into a ceiling. Recommend to use 1-1/2”, 18-ga finished nails. After adjusting the appropriate pressure of air gun, nail the finished nail 45o (from outside to inside angle) at the edge between the bead and tongue. Place a nail every 12”.

 

18:    How can I clean mold and mildew?

A:    No special vinyl-cleaning liquids are required!  You have three options:

  • For small spots, use Fantastik or Windex.

  • For larger spots, a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water will work just fine.

  • Or for very stubborn larger spots, use a solution of 1/3 cup powdered laundry detergent, 2/3 cup powdered household cleaner (like Spic and Span), 1 quart liquid laundry bleach, and 1 gallon of water.

19:    What about other kinds of stains?

A:   

  • Bubble Gum:    Fantastik, Murphy Oil Soap, or a solution of vinegar (30%), water (70%) and Windex.

  • Crayon:    Lestoil.

  • DAP (an oil-based caulk):    Fantastik.

  • Felt-tip pen:    Fantastik.

  • Grass:    Fantastik, Lysol, Murphy Oil Soap, Windex.

  • Lithium (car grease):    Fantastik, Lestoil, Murphy Oil Soap, Windex.

  • Motor Oil:    Fantastik, Lysol, Murphy Oil Soap, Windex.

  • Paint:    Brillo pad, Soft Scrub.

  • Pencil:    Soft Scrub.

  • Rust:    Fantastik, Murphy Oil Soap, Windex.

  • Tar:    Soft Scrub.
